Layers of the Earth

Geography – Spring Term – Why do people live near volcanoes?

This term in Mercury class we are exploring our big geographic question of 'Why do people live near volcanoes?' For our first lesson on this topic we did a practical lesson learning about the different layers of the Earth. Using different coloured plasticine, we represented the different layers, from the solid-iron inner core, the liquid outer core, the molten-rock mantle and to the thin crust. We learnt how each layer plays an important role in how the Earth works. Further to this, we also learnt about how tectonic plates move to create mountains, volcanoes and even earthquakes when we rub and bump into each other. As the term continues, we will focus more on how our earth was created from its early days to what we have today.
