Greek Day
Today in Mercury and Saturn class we took part in Greek Day. Before arriving, we were asked to come dressed in ancient Greek clothing made from linen and other features to show the traditional clothing. In the morning, Mercury class did a lesson comparing the two city-states of Athens and Sparta. Focusing on comparing the similarities and differences of each city-state based on the categories of location, government, education, warfare and children. After researching these categories, we then had a class debate, discussing where we would rather live; Athens or Sparta. For this class debate we had a special judge come in (Rocco’s Grandad), who is from Greece, to help us deliberate. We then voted and found that most of us would prefer to live in Sparta rather than Athens.
In the afternoon, Saturn class joined us and we were treated to a culture afternoon with Nick and Maria from ‘Let’s Go Greek.’ They are a Greek catering company who made us some delicious food for us to try. First though, we started the afternoon with a quiz about Ancient Greece. Then we went to the hall to take part in different traditional Greek dances. Finally, we returned to the classroom, where we were able to sample the different Greek food choices. It was an amazing experience that both Mercury and Saturn class thoroughly enjoyed!
