Working out Food Miles

As part of our Geography work answering our big question of ‘where does our food come from?’ we calculated the food miles of many selected items we found at home. We begin by first identifying where in the world some of our food products came from. After we then used a scaled map to mark out the distance each product travelled to get to the UK. Using our conversion of 1cm = 800km we worked out which of our food products travelled the furtherest and which were ‘home grown’. Knowing this we are then going to consider where our food in our school dinners is from and how much of it is locally grown.
